Wales 'attracting business brains'
Feb 25 2009
A new £11.4 million programme has been launched to attract talented graduates to work with Welsh businesses.
The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarships scheme, run by the University of Wales, aims to attract 100 top graduates from across the globe between 2009 and 2012 to improve the country's research and development activities.
Graduates will receive £20,000 per year, a £5,000 research grant and paid tuition fees in one of the world's best-supported PhD programmes, as well as being assigned to a high-growth firm to help improve its innovation potential and competitiveness.
As part of the University of Wales' Global Academy initiative, the scholarships will focus on more than developing the skills of the graduates, with the emphasis being placed on generating new products, encouraging cutting-edge thinking and driving commercialisation.
The Prince of Wales, who is a chancellor of the university, comments: 'The Global Academy will be bringing the best innovation talent to Wales to work alongside businesses and sectors in developing world-class technologies.'
Last week, skills secretary John Denham told the Royal Academy of Engineering that UK firms can establish themselves as world leaders, if the right support is given to the country's research base.
