Q: I’ve heard that local councils help fund premises for the first year of a business. Is this correct and if so could you point us in the right direction?

Some councils may be able to offer what they call Incubator offices. These units cater for start-up companies, helping them to survive and grow during the start-up period when they are most vulnerable. Typically, incubators provide hands-on management assistance and orchestrated exposure to critical business or technical support services. They also offer entrepreneurial firms shared office services, access to equipment, flexible leases and expandable space - all under one roof.

An incubation program's main goal is to produce successful graduates - businesses that are financially viable and free standing when they leave the incubator, usually within two to three years.

I suggest you look at the grants and loans section of the Business Link website for raising further money as the available financial support will depend on where your business is based.
