A handbook on how local authorities and businesses can work together to help reduce the burden of red tape has been published by the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI).

Red tape always figures highly in small firms’ lists of complaints and the guide is part of the DTI’s campaign to help them comply more easily with the often-complicated regulations.

Small business minister Nigel Griffiths said that “the guide provides a means for ensuring regulations are implemented in an even-handed, proportionate and consistent manner.” He believes it will help small businesses by “making it easier to comply with regulations”.

In a further attempt to relieve small firms of red tape stress, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) is offering a compliance service to SME member firms at a reduced rate to help them comply with employment regulations.

The CBI has teamed up with employment law specialist beprofessional, to offer its members a free 15-day evaluation that allows access to the firm’s range of services, which include advice on how to deal with employment legislation forms. After the 15-day trial, there is the option to subscribe for a year for Ł150, a 50% discount to the normal cost.
