No car stereo has ever offered so many connections, claims publicity from manufacturer Parrot. Costing £189.99, the RK8200 connects to your iPod, USB flash drive, MP3 player, SD card reader or analogue source, and even plays files sent wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Once you’ve plugged in your mobile phone, which slips neatly into the compartment behind the stereo, you can make or receive calls through the car’s speakers – and do this hands-free thanks to a voice recognition feature. During a call, the music you’re listening to is automatically muted.

The volume of your music will be adjusted according to the surrounding noise – handy for those motorway journeys – and the RK8200 will select which microphone to use depending on which person in the car is speaking. (That’s called Dynamic Choice of Best Microphone or DCBM, by the way.)

In fact, the RK8200 is so intelligent it may just end up driving the car for you. Daisy, Daisy…
