Q: I am about to become self-employed. I am presently claiming jobseekers allowance and related benefits. As my earnings will initially be low, how will this affect my benefits and who should I inform?

You should register as self-employed with HMRC within three months of setting up your business or you may incur a fine of £100. Also you should inform your Jobcentre Plus of your changed circumstances.

Depending where you live in the UK, your age, and how long you have been claiming jobseeker’s allowance, there are different schemes available. Rather than give you a detailed answer here, I suggest you contact your local Jobcentre Plus as they will be able to let you know what help is available for your particular circumstances. Your benefit may need to change but I strongly suggest you talk to your local Jobcentre Plus as soon as possible.
