Apprenticeship bill unveiled
Feb 06 2009
A new bill promises to give employees increased access to training programmes.
The government claims that the apprenticeships, skills, children and learning bill will give all suitably-qualified young people a legal right to on-the-job development.
Providing the first complete overhaul of apprenticeship legislation for almost 200 years, the bill is designed to meet the goal of one in five young people being on a course of this type by 2020.
The legislation will create a stronger and more effective framework to ensure skills development programmes are of good quality and give all members of staff the right to request training throughout their working lives.
John Denham, skills secretary, comments: 'This new bill will put in place new rights so that at whatever stage you are in life, you can continue to improve your skills and get training to improve your career prospects.'
Last month, the government announced it will fund an additional 35,000 apprentices next year, adding a £140 million investment to the £1 billion already pledged to these schemes.
