Companies 'should focus on staff skills'

Nov 26 2008

The current climate makes it more critical for businesses to invest in developing people and increasing their skills.

Claire McCartney, advisor for organisation and resourcing at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), says it is 'extremely important' to develop the skills of companies and their employees.

'I think perhaps the current climate and the economic uncertainty makes it even more important for businesses to invest in developing people to meet their specific business needs and objectives,' she adds.

McCartney also states it is key for staff to encourage training in order to make themselves more marketable individuals and allow them to better compete for jobs.

Individuals should also be able to adapt to their business changing and so should be taught transferable skills to 'meet those changes in market forces'.

Chancellor Alistair Darling announced in this week's pre-Budget report that more support and training would be given to people who have been made redundant, to aid them in setting up their own business.
