Government encourages companies to train

Nov 12 2008

The government has launched a series of ad campaigns to encourage businesses to train staff and promote the benefits of doing so.

Firms are being advised that training staff is ideal in the current economic climate and that companies who do not are 2.5 times more likely to fail than those who do.

The £2.4 million campaign will see adverts in between primetime TV shows, as the government displays that it has made it easier for small companies to access the services.

John Denham, skills secretary, says: 'Investing in training is essential to any business but it is more important than ever in the current economic climate.'

He adds that small companies are 'the backbone of our economy' but often are unaware of the services and advice available to them.

Denham says these firms have been made the focus of a £350 million support package and the government is making it 'easier and quicker' for them to give their staff extra training.

The skills secretary announced last month that £98 million will be put into training in certain sectors of the economy to boost industry.
