TUC: High morale important for staff retention

Sep 08 2008

Employees need to have the ability to grow and learn in their job in order to keep morale high and prevent them from looking for work elsewhere, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) believes.

Nigel Stanley, head of campaigns at the TUC, says that people value the sense they are progressing through their careers and remarks that those who are not happy in their roles will look for other ones elsewhere.

'Feeling stuck, bored and not having your talents recognised is always a recipe for poor morale,' he comments.

Stanley also recommends giving staff some autonomy over how they carry out their jobs and making sure they feel challenged.

Research from market research firm GfK NOP in May found 17 per cent of UK employees intend to leave their current position as soon as possible and another 12 per cent intend to leave within the next year.

Employers' attitudes were discovered to be high on the list of complaints, with 64 per cent of those with a disengaged manager saying they will leave as soon as another opportunity arises or within the next 12 months.
