Guide launched to protect from tribunals

Sep 02 2008

A guide is being launched intended to protect employers from possible pay disputes and discrimination claims.

Employment relations service Acas is hoping to make employers less susceptible to such problems by educating them on how to ensure their wage calculations are fair and transparent.

Job evaluation determines the relative importance of different roles, disregarding who is carrying out the jobs.

The guide comes in response to a significant increase in the number of employment tribunals over the last year.

Frank Blair, the director of Acas Scotland and developer of the guide, advises companies to ensure they have made adequate preparation for carrying out the procedure, which can offer 'strong business benefits'.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), job evaluation is most suited to companies with 50 employees or more.

CIPD says the schemes take into consideration work experience, qualifications, training, social skills, judgement and responsibility, among other factors.
