Fees for migrant workers to be introduced

Aug 15 2008

Firms which employ skilled workers originating from other countries are to be liable to pay a fee for taking them on.

According to the government, this will mean only employees with talents which are seriously needed by the UK will be allowed in, the BBC reports.

New rules, which will be enforced by the Home Office's Border Agency, will make businesses go through a vetting process before hiring potential migrants from outside the EU.

This will increase the requirements that have to be met by firms beyond the current points-based system, which already asks for qualifications, skills and earning potential.

Firms are being warned that when the scheme is launched in November it may take up to two months to deal with applications, the BBC states.

Migrant workers can also apply to stay in the UK as independent entrepreneurs if they are interested in setting up, running or taking over one or more businesses.
