Workers 'under too much pressure'

Jul 29 2008

Employees are facing burnout because they are under too much pressure to perform and are expected to be constantly available for work, a life coach believes.

Lynette Allen says many people are in the state of mind to work 'all the time' and that there is a culture of people putting in long hours at the office.

She explains: 'We want to be the best at what we do and sometimes we are under that misguided apprehension that that means longer hours and being more accessible rather than working smarter.'

Her comments come in response to a new Standard Life study which shows 35 per cent of people believe it is difficult to switch off and relax after work and six per cent of people call it impossible.

According to the study, 70 per cent of people leave their phones on all night and 15 per cent of directors have cut their workouts short to check their BlackBerrys.

Figures from the Trades Union Congress reveal that 3.3 million people around the UK work more than 48 hours a week.
