Small businesses could benefit from employing apprentices, according to one expert.

Finance Daily reports that, as the credit crunch makes conditions tighter for small businesses, savvy companies are hiring apprentices to "help them maintain a competitive edge".

According to the news provider, Stephen Gardner, director of apprenticeships at the Learning Skills Council (LSC), recently stated that enthusiastic, talented would-be apprentices are available, but all too often are overlooked by employers.

He added that taking on trainees can befit both employers and employees as the apprentice gets the benefits of handed-down business knowledge, while the company gets access to someone who is eager to make a career for themselves.

This news follows comments from the marketing director of the Feel Good Drinks Company, who asserted that students on work experience can bring benefits to small businesses.

Speaking to the Times, Steve Cooper noted that such students offer a "completely fresh set of eyes" which can bring a new perspective to a firm.
