Immigration points system could 'challenge' SMEs
Mar 05 2008
A new points-based system for immigration could cause problems for small firms, according to the Confederation of British Industry.
Neil Carberry, the confederation's senior policy advisor, says that while the system is likely to be a 'successful innovation' for larger firms, it might be more problematic for smaller businesses.
'For smaller firms with less HR capacity, the higher fees and higher responsibilities will be a challenge,' he says.
Regulation which came into force on 29 February governs migrants entering the UK from outside the EU.
A 'points score' is calculated based on the migrant's skills level, age, education, and the value they would be expected to bring into the British economy. The fear is that small firms will be burdened with more adminisration and the costs it brings with it.
Meanwhile, the government says it hopes that the points based system will prove objective and give potential migrants a more clear indication whether or not their application for entry to the UK will be accepted.
