Recruitment increases in June

The amount of people placed in permanent jobs rose last month, say recruitment consultancies.
A balance of 29 per cent of agencies recorded an increase in the number of staff placed in full time positions, compared with 21 per cent in May, according to a report from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).
Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, says: ‘This is an encouraging sign that the jobs market is stable and, in some sectors such as construction and engineering, rapidly growing. However, with the predictions of up to 600,000 job losses in the public sector, it is still too early to tell how much of a knock-on effect this will have on job creation in the private sector.’
Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG, adds that the effect of the government’s efficiency savings will soon be felt. ‘The big challenge will be to transfer as many of these jobs as possible to the private sector through outsourcing and divestment, otherwise the economy will be put under enormous pressure at all levels,’ he says.
The survey of 400 recruitment and employment consultancies comes after reports earlier this week of high graduate unemployment.
