SMEs key to happy workforce

Jun 16 2010

Employees at small companies are happier than their counterparts at larger firms.

Although staff in smaller firms statistically face higher accident rates, have fewer training opportunities and receive less pay, their overall satisfaction is higher, claims a report from Warwick Business School.

Professor Francis Greene, co-author of the report, says: ‘There tend to be fewer rules and procedures in small firms, so employees feel less constrained, which can create a positive culture. They also tend to have more varied work tasks, contributing to high levels of worker satisfaction.’

A recent poll from PricewaterhouseCoopers found that staff were motivated by non-monetary benefits, such as flexible working, above bonuses and pension schemes.
