Stressed out Britain

May 14 2010

Owner-managers are suffering from mounting pressure in the day-to-day running of their businesses.

Some 41 per cent say their levels of stress have increased compared to last year, says a survey from accountancy firm Grant Thornton.

David Campbell, partner at Grant Thornton, says this could be due to overwork: ‘Taking the time to step away from the business to reflect and recharge can help owners bring a new perspective when making decisions.’

Of the 205 business owners reporting an increase in stress levels, 34 per cent say it is due to the economic crisis, 26 per cent that it is the result of a heavy workload and a further 26 per cent say it is consequence of cash flow problems.

According to the survey, business owners in Northern Ireland showed the highest stress levels (54 per cent), with those in Scotland reporting the lowest (26 per cent).
