SMEs urged to say 'you're hired' to apprentices
Oct 22 2009
The government hopes to offer more than 14,000 apprenticeship placements for young people over the next three years through its new recruitment and training models.
Kevin Brennan, MP for Cardiff West, says: ‘We want to give small and medium-sized firms the extra support and resources they need to take on more apprentices. These innovative models mean small businesses can now get on board and back young Britain.’
Iain Wright, Minister for Apprenticeships, says: ‘Apprenticeships offer young people a valuable opportunity to build their skills and practical experience. We want apprenticeships to be a mainstream option for young people and we are committed to expanding the number of apprenticeship places available.’
A survey by the Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland found that only 17 per cent of firms in the region had trained an apprentice in the last three years.
According to government figures, more than 250,000 people are expected to start an apprenticeship in this academic year.
