HSE: Firms are focusing on health and safety
Jun 29 2009
New statistics show that the number of workers fatally injured in the UK over 2008/09 has fallen to 180.
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), this shows a 22 per cent decrease on the annual average for the past five years and is a rate of 0.59 fatalities per 100,000 workers.
A spokesman for the watchdog attributes the fall to a growing acceptance that good health and safety standards prove beneficial to companies and help them to avoid problems.
Furthermore, the representative suggests that management now tends to work more closely with employees who are on the frontline and have a greater understanding of the risks presented by their jobs when addressing health and safety issues.
However, he adds that 180 workplace fatalities in one year is still too many, noting that this represents three deaths every week, and highlights a new HSE campaign which asks firms to sign a pledge to focus on safety.
