CIPD: Firms focus on retention
Jun 18 2009
Companies are planning to concentrate on retaining their staff instead of recruiting fresh talent, according to a recent survey.
Research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) shows that 56 per cent of businesses plan to retain workers rather than take on new ones due to a perceived skills shortage.
The survey reveals that 73 per cent of firms believe there is a lack of necessary specialist skills in the labour market, leading them to train employees internally to fill positions.
Furthermore, it finds that three-quarters believe the most effective recruitment strategy is to train existing staff to perform a role, while 47 per cent are offering increased learning and development opportunities in a bid to retain staff.
Jill Miller, resourcing and talent planning researcher at the CIPD, comments: 'It's encouraging to see that employers have their eye on the long-term in their recruitment strategies.
'In the face of the current resourcing challenges, they are looking at innovative ways to ensure they retain and develop their talent.'
A recent report by the Confederation of British Industry suggested that London's economic recovery could be damaged by a skills shortage, with 38 per cent of firms believing this is a problem.
