CIPD welcomes shelving of parental leave plans
Jun 03 2009
Business secretary Lord Mandelson sidelined the proposal to allow new mothers to have one year of paid maternity leave and fathers sharing six months of this because of the ongoing recession.
A spokesman for the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform reveals that the appropriateness of all new regulations is being reviewed, explaining: 'It is only right that in tough economic times we look afresh at the costs and benefits of new regulations.'
The shelving was well received by the CIPD, which claims it has always been concerned by the bureaucratic problems which could have been caused by allowing shared parental leave.
Mike Emmott, employee relations adviser at the organisation, comments: 'What would have been cumbersome in good times could become the straw that breaks the camel's back in a recession - and could damage the long-term business case for better work-life balance.'
However, he adds that the shelving of the plans should not cause the whole issue of parental leave to be forgotten and calls for politicians and business leaders to develop workable proposals for a new system.
