CBI: More training support needed
Apr 07 2009
Employers say the government needs to provide more support for their training activities, research finds.
The latest skills survey from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and education provider Nord Anglia shows that half of employers want to make their training more effective to maximise returns, but many want the government to offer more help.
Around two-fifths of companies which use the Train to Gain scheme claim that it has had no impact on their business activities, while three-quarters say the quality of its brokerage service is mixed or poor.
Richard Lambert, CBI director general, comments: 'The government has a big role to play in helping employers make the most of their training and providing access to funding. Its flagship Train to Gain programme isn't meeting the needs of enough businesses that use it.'
He adds that the scheme needs to become more flexible if it is to effectively fulfil the varying training needs of the UK's companies.
Recent research carried out by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development claimed that firms are prioritising management and leadership training in order to survive the ongoing economic downturn.
