Q: An employee often does not turn up for work and does not call to let me know why. This may last for more than two days. What can I do?

This is unauthorised absence and as such should be addressed through your disciplinary procedure. As you have not tackled this so far you should give something to your entire workforce setting out that from now on you are tightening up on absences and these will be dealt with through the disciplinary process.

Set out clearly what the absence reporting procedure is and that a failure to comply with the procedure itself is a disciplinary matter in its own right. Tackle any new absences through the procedure.
