Q: A member of staff has pre-booked holidays but has been signed off work. We understand the holidays still stand. How will this affect their sick leave?

Not necessarily; much depends on your company’s rules and procedures in regards to booking holidays. You do not mention if employees have a contractual agreement in place that stipulates any holidays booked during absence will still be classed as annual leave. If this is the case, you should refer the employee to the aforementioned clause within their contract and allow the holidays to stand.

If this is not the case, sickness would over-ride the existing holiday booking as it is unreasonable for you to expect an employee to be on holiday while they are sick. You should remember that holiday entitlement is in place for a reason; employees need time to recharge and reenergise themselves ready to return to work.
