Government code 'to reduce red tape'

The government has introduced a new code of practice intended to make it easier for regulators to consult with businesses on potential new rules.

Businesses that are found to comply with regulations will be less likely to endure government checks, whereas those who do not will face tough inspections and advice on how to better follow the rules.

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) also promises more 'transparent, flexible and consistent enforcement'.

Business and competitiveness minister Shiriti Vadera says that regulation is one of the 'top concerns' for business and the new legislation will 'ease the burdens' for firms.

She comments: 'Regulators must take a light-touch approach to companies who comply with the law and target enforcement only at those who benefit by flouting it. This is a vital step towards delivering on our promises to cut red tape.'

In the 2008 Budget, Chancellor Alistair Darling promised a cut to the burden of red tape on small businesses.
