SME owners to meet chancellor to debate tax proposals
Jan 16 2008
SME owners are to meet Alistair Darling in a last bid to convince him to retract his recommendations to get rid of the capital gains tax taper relief.
A group of entrepreneurs are expected to meet up with treasury officials to discuss Alistair Darling's proposals.
Speaking to the BBC, Richard Lambert, director-general of the employers' organisation, the Confederation of British Industry, says: 'If you have been building up a business over donkeys years and you suddenly face the prospect of a higher tax bill, you have to think now about whether you're going to get out of it.
'That's what people are doing,' he concludes.
Meanwhile, Linda Bennett, founder of shoemaker LK Bennett, revealed last December that her decision to sell her company was influenced by the eight per cent increase in tax.
The entrepreneur, whose company provides the likes of Kate Moss with fashion items, is thought to be one of the first big business owners to put a business on the market as a result of the changes.
