Building a customer base
Jun 05 2007
The first thing that you need to clarify is exactly who is it that you are targeting, where they are located and exactly what is important to them. Once you have defined that you need to think about where these people will go, what they are likely to read and where they are most likely to need to pick up information about what you offer. You also need to think about timing – when will they most need your services.
Think about the process someone goes through when they lose someone special. Who is involved in that process? Churches, memorial services, support services are some examples. Could you build a relationship with these people and get them to recommend your services at the right time.
You could consider advertising in the classified funeral services section of your local newspaper, as this would be read by those people most likely to need your services. Another possibility, if it was sensitively done could be to walk around your local grave yards and leave a small laminated card offering grave tending at the grave side. You could leave a small floral tribute with it with a kind message.
I am not sure how readily available contact information for the families of the recently bereaved is and whether or not you it would be appropriate to write a card or letter offering your services. The register of deaths might be a source of this information.
You will need to produce some appropriate marketing collateral that suits the business you are in and the feelings of the people you want to offer your services to. You will need to communicate the value of what you offer in an appropriate way, bearing in mind what will be most important to those buying your service.
I hope this helps you. Remember what you do it really special and important work.
