Post: Charging for samples

Q) I have my own interior design business. I have a completed free consultation with a client and the next step is to provide samples. How do I know what to charge for these? What’s reasonable?

This is part of the process of gaining business and is, in effect, a marketing cost.

You have already invested time, money and expertise in the consultation, so the decision you have to make is whether, or how much more, you want to invest in that marketing. You have three options:

- Offer free samples

- Charge for the samples, at cost, or at your normal charge out rate, ie cost plus typical profit margin

- Charge with the option of offsetting the charge against the contract should your client go ahead. This way, if they do not go ahead, you can charge for samples used; if they do go ahead, they will have, in effect, got these for free – or you will have absorbed the cost in the contract fees.
