Workers should be wary of opening Valentine's e-cards

Feb 14 2008

Workers should be wary of opening e-cards on Valentine's day, an internet security firm warns.

Kapersky says that e-cards are a great way of 'reaching out to somebody', especially on 14 February.

However, David Emm, senior technology consultant for Kaspersky, says that people do need to be cautious and be aware of the potential dangers involved.

'The problem is that some of the malicious mechanisms can look very legitimate,' he explains.

He adds that the company has been tracking behaviour on Valentine's day which could be potentially threatening and many of the programs, some of which have featured Disney and other cartoon characters, have appeared to come from trusted sources.

Meanwhile, earlier in February BBC online reported that, according to security firms, the number of malicious programs found online has reached an unprecedented high.

Some estimates suggest there were five times as many variants of malicious programs in circulation in 2007 compared to 2006.
