Q: I’m in the process of buying a domain name. Should I be buying variations to this domain to prevent competitors purchasing them; If so how many?

It is always a good idea to purchase the main variations of a domain name, particularly if you have a reasonably obvious name. It is not unheard of for competitors of a business to buy the .co.uk or .net variations in order to pick up customers that forget the extension or misread the URL.

Buy as many as you think are feasible, and consider buying typos of your company name (mircosoft.com for example). Domain names are not expensive these days. Chris

It's also a very good idea to buy domain names with your keywords in the name. It helps with search engine rankings.
