Lack of info on business energy usage is a major hurdle to going green

MPs to discuss greener business premises

A group of MPs are holding an enquiry into the problems and barriers stopping business property owners from making their commercial buildings more environmentally-friendly.

The All Party Urban Development Group (APUDG) is hoping to identify issues that stop commercial property-owners from improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions.

Regulation, penalties, fiscal incentives and educational campaigns will be considered as ways to encourage the reduction in greenhouse emissions and waste from commercial buildings.

Witnesses will be called to speak in front of the APUDG in May, including government policy-makers, private sector representatives and business occupiers.

The group suggests that the data business owners have about their energy usage is lacking and aims to find out what is preventing them from getting it.

According to the British Property Federation, half of all greenhouse emissions come from buildings and there is concern that existing building stock is not being improved quickly enough.
