BPF behind commercial property emissions reductions

The British Property Federation (BPF) is backing a new parliamentary investigation aimed at reducing emissions from commercial buildings.

Liz Peace, the chief executive of the BPF, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that she was behind the All-Party Urban Development Group's investigation.

'If you look at existing buildings quite often a lot of the waste and a lot of the waste in energy is simply through how the building is operated,' she commented.

Peace told the programme that she was encouraging BPF members to change the way they run their buildings in order to reduce waste.

However, it can be 'highly costly' to make certain improvements, she added, asking for tax breaks and other fiscal incentives for businesses to encourage them to make changes.

The government has already set a target dictating that by 2019 all new commercial properties should be carbon neutral.
